A Brief History of the Setting
In the world of Alran Daerth, land has been scarce for centuries. Only the eldest of elves can remember a time before the Flood, when the great mountains of the world were connected by vast plains, deep valleys, and kingdoms of splendor. That previous world had been though lost forever to the tomb of the Endless Sea.
Until, nearly a century ago…
The waters of the world began to recede. Slowly at first, but more and more rapidly every year. Islands have doubled or tripled in size, and coasts between nearby landmasses have begun to connect once again. As the waters roll back, ancient ruins, lost temples and sunken caverns are found. Within them, unspeakable treasures of the world before The Flood.
And with these treasures, danger. Monsters have taken up home here, and the protections and traps of wizards and hoarders long passed await the greedy fingers of those who dare enter these forgotten landmarks.
Many brave, stupid, or greedy folk have decided to make their living hunting and selling these treasures. They are known as Darkrunners, though they also have several other less-than-savory nicknames, and are spurned by most traditional folk who seek to rebuild what civilization still exists rather than kicking rocks in the ruins of old. Yet even the most conservative of merchants can not resist the treasures that are brought back by the Darkrunners, and so they are tolerated.
You, adventurers, have through various means, come to work as a Darkrunner. May you light your chosen dungeons to find more treasure than traps.
